Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach: Maui's Most Dramatic Stop (2026)
The Road to Hāna has 600 curves, 59 bridges, and 12 named waterfalls. Of all 64 miles, the stop most people remember is Waianapanapa State Park — black sand beach, blowholes, sea caves, a lava-rock coastline hammered by turquoise surf. It looks like Iceland placed on top of Hawaii.
Waianapanapa is not a swimming beach. It's a looking beach. The surf is powerful and the shoreline is volcanic lava rock. But for photography, geology, and the sensation of standing next to something genuinely wild, it's the best stop on the entire road.
What's at Waianapanapa
The black sand beach: About 200 feet of jet-black volcanic sand. The sand is made of basalt — the same lava that built the island, ground to sand grain size by millennia of surf. It's striking against the green palms and turquoise water. The beach appears calm but the shorebreak is deceptive and the undertow is strong. Don't swim here.
Blowholes: The lava shelf on the north end of the park has natural blowholes where waves force water up through fissures in the rock. Active when swell is running. Best at mid-to-high tide.
Sea caves (Waianapanapa Cave / Wai Anapanapa): Two freshwater caves just inland from the beach. The caves are connected by underwater passages to the sea, and legend says they house the spirit of a Hawaiian princess. You can wade into the shallow parts; the deeper sections require a flashlight. Eels live here.
Coastal trail: A 3-mile trail runs along the lava coastline north from the park to Hāna Bay. Black rock, anchialine pools (landlocked pools connected to the ocean through underground passages), native hala trees, ocean views. One of the best easy coastal walks in Maui.
Reservations — Now Required
Since 2022, Waianapanapa State Park requires advance reservations for entry. You cannot just show up. Book at dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/maui/waianapanapa-state-park.
Cost: $5/person (Hawaiʻi residents free). Separate fee for parking ($10/vehicle).
Timing: Reservations are by 2-hour time blocks. Morning slots (7-9 AM) have the softest light and lowest crowds. By midday, tour buses arrive and the parking lot can back up.
Book ahead: Popular slots fill up 2-4 weeks in advance, especially June-August and December-January. If you're planning a Road to Hāna trip, book Waianapanapa first before locking in your date.
How to Fit It Into the Road to Hāna
Waianapanapa is at mile marker 32, about 3 miles before Hāna town. Most people hit it on the way in (morning) or on the way back (afternoon). Morning is better — better light, fewer people.
Suggested timing: Book the 7 or 8 AM slot if you can start from Pāʻia by 5:30 AM. This gets you to Waianapanapa before most tour groups, gives you the beach to yourself for 30 minutes, and still leaves the rest of the road ahead.
Time to allow: 45-90 minutes at Waianapanapa is enough to do the beach, the blowhole, the cave, and part of the coastal trail.
Nearby Stops
Hāna town (3 miles south): Small, quiet, worth a lunch stop. Hasegawa General Store has been open since 1910. Hāna Bay has a calm pier for a swim.
ʻOheʻo Gulch (7 Sacred Pools): 10 miles south of Hāna. A series of waterfall pools descending toward the sea. Swimming closed frequently due to leptospirosis warnings — check before you go.
Waiʻānapanapa Cabin rentals: The park has 12 DLNR-managed cabins on the cliff above the beach. They book out months ahead but sleep 4 for about $90/night — the most dramatic lodging on the Road to Hāna.
