Molokini is a partly submerged crescent-shaped volcanic crater rising from the channel off south Maui, its curved rim sheltering some of the clearest water in Hawaiʻi. It's a State Marine Life Conservation District reachable only by boat — and in winter, the crossing doubles as a whale watch.

The experience

Molokini is a partially submerged, crescent-shaped volcanic crater that rises from the ʻAlalākeiki Channel between Maui and Kahoʻolawe. Its curved rim shelters the inner cove from wind and swell, producing some of the clearest water in the Hawaiian Islands, with visibility that frequently exceeds 100 feet. The islet is a State Marine Life Conservation District, and its protected reefs shelter hundreds of species of fish and coral along with sea turtles. Because Molokini is reachable only by boat, snorkelers arrive on catamaran and charter tours that anchor inside the crescent, where calm, shallow water welcomes first-time snorkelers while still rewarding experienced ones.

Whale season on the water

From roughly December through March, the waters off south Maui become a breeding and nursery ground for North Pacific humpback whales, which migrate to Hawaiʻi each winter to calve and mate. Many Molokini snorkel tours running in these months double as whale-watching trips, with humpbacks often visible breaching and spouting on the crossing to and from the crater. The channels around Maui, Molokini, Lānaʻi, and Kahoʻolawe are among the best places in the islands to see them.

Fitting it into a Maui trip

A Molokini snorkel is one of the classic half-day outings on Maui. Most tours leave early to reach the crater while the water is calmest, returning by midday and leaving the rest of the day open for beaches, an Upcountry drive, or a Haleakalā visit. Bringing reef-safe sunscreen helps protect the very coral that makes the site special — part of the shared kuleana of caring for the reef.

Local tip

Go on the earliest departure you can — Molokini's water is calmest and clearest in the morning before the trade winds pick up, and winter mornings often add whale sightings on the crossing.
