Biography
Keauhou is a traditional Hawaiian music trio made up of brothers Zachary Alakaʻi Lum and Nicholas Kealiʻi Lum along with Jonah Kahanuola Solatorio. All three are graduates of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama on Oʻahu, and each earned a graduate degree from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, in fields including ethnomusicology, Hawaiian language, and education. The group's name was suggested by Hawaiian-language teacher Hailama Farden while the young musicians played in the school's Midkiff Library; it draws on a canoe named Makani Hou o Keauhou and is understood to evoke a new or renewed generation.
The trio traces its beginnings to around 2008, with the lineup settling by 2009, and it won first place at the unamplified Ka Himeni Ana contest in 2008. Its sound centers on the performance, preservation, and perpetuation of traditional mele Hawaiʻi and Hawaiian-language song, combining Zachary Lum's bass, Nicholas Lum's tenor, and Jonah Kahanuola Solatorio's falsetto over ʻukulele, guitar, and slack-key. Zachary Lum is also active as a haku mele (composer of Hawaiian-language poetry and song). The group performs in support of hula and Hawaiian cultural practice.
Keauhou released its self-titled debut album in 2017, followed by I ke Kō a ke Au in 2018 and Ua Kō, Ua ʻĀina in 2019, which the members have described as completing a trilogy. A fourth album, I Leʻa, was released in 2022. The debut drew wide notice for sweeping all nine categories in which it was nominated at the 2017 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, and the two follow-up albums earned additional honors from the same body.
