August is peak Hawaii. Schools start returning on the mainland, but Hawaii's calendar stays full through the month — Obon festivals at temples across all four islands, the early Aloha Festivals events on Oʻahu, surf contests on south-shore breaks, and warm water that makes August the best snorkeling and diving month of the year.

August Weather
August is the warmest and driest month across all four islands. Trade winds provide natural air conditioning (usually 10-15 mph). Rain is rare on the south and west shores. Ocean temperature peaks in August at 82-84°F — the warmest swimming of the year.
South swells: August brings the last strong south swells before winter north swells arrive. South-facing breaks on Oʻahu (Waikīkī, Diamond Head), Maui (Kīhei, Mākena), and Kauaʻi (Poʻipū) are at their best.
North shores: Completely flat and calm in August. Sharks Cove on Oʻahu's North Shore is a snorkel pond. Hanalei Bay on Kauaʻi is ideal for SUP and kayaking.
Obon Season (Statewide, July-August Peak)
Buddhist Obon festivals run through August at temples across all four islands. These are among the most culturally distinctive events in Hawaii — descended from Japanese bon odori festivals brought by plantation-era immigrants, adapted and preserved in ways that have disappeared from Japan itself.
What happens: Taiko drum music at sunset. Traditional bon dance (tanko bushi) in a circle around a yagura tower. Yukatas (summer kimonos) — some attendees dress up, all are welcome. Food stalls selling teriyaki, snow cones, andagi (Okinawan doughnuts), Japanese mochi.
Most are free to attend as a community visitor. Donations appreciated.

Aloha Festivals (Late August-September)
The Aloha Festivals are the largest Hawaiian cultural celebration in the state — hundreds of events over several weeks, centered on Oʻahu but with events statewide. The festival formally kicks off in late August and runs through September.
Key events: the Floral Parade down Kalākaua Avenue, the Pōʻaliwa (Royal Court) investiture, free hula performances throughout Waikīkī. Much of the festival is free.

Kapolei Weekend Markets: The west Oʻahu arts and crafts market scene runs strong in August. Local makers, food trucks, live music.
Kona Coffee Cultural Festival (Big Island, usually late October): Preparation and buzz starts in August — the harvest season begins. Farm tours are at their most active August-September.
Maui Onion Festival (Kula, varies): The Maui onion (Maui Gold) is a genuine local crop, sweeter than any mainland onion. The Kula farm community celebrates with food events in the summer.
Aloha Tower Friday Events (Oʻahu): Aloha Tower Marketplace in Honolulu Harbor hosts regular Friday evening events through summer — food, music, outdoor dining with harbor views.
Best Things to Do in Hawaii in August
Snorkeling and diving: August is peak snorkel season. Kealakekua Bay (Big Island), Molokini (Maui), Sharks Cove (Oʻahu), Tunnels Beach (Kauaʻi, summer-only). Visibility is at its clearest.
Surfing south swells: Waikīkī, Kīhei, Poʻipū. South swells can deliver consistent 3-6 foot surf through August.
Stargazing: Summit of Mauna Kea (Big Island). August nights are clear. The Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet has free public viewing Friday-Saturday.
Helicopter tours: Clear August weather makes this the best month for helicopter tours on all four islands. Kauaʻi interior, Maui volcanic landscape, Big Island (if there's activity at Kīlauea).
Farmers markets: Every island is at peak local produce in August. Oʻahu: KCC Farmers Market (Saturdays), Hilo Farmers Market (Wed/Sat), Hanapepe Friday Night Festival (Kauaʻi), Makawao Farmers Market (Maui, Sundays).
