Best Oahu Day Trips from Waikīkī — 2026 Guide

AlohaCalendar Editorial|June 21, 2026

Waikīkī is a mile-long strip of hotels, restaurants, and beach chairs fronting one of the most recognizable coastlines in the world. It's also a genuinely useful base: 30–60 minutes from nearly every worthwhile destination on the island. Here are the day trips that actually justify renting a car.

North Shore — The Classic

Drive time from Waikīkī: 45 minutes to 1 hour via H-2 or H-1 to Kamehameha Hwy.

The North Shore is 7 miles of legendary surf breaks, small towns, and roadside shrimp stands. It's the reason surf culture exists in its current form.

What to do: Start at Haleʻiwa town (coffee at Waialua Bakery, shave ice at Matsumoto's — the original, since 1951). Drive east along Kamehameha Highway through Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach, and the Banzai Pipeline pull-off.

Best time: November–April for surf (up to 30-foot faces at Pipeline). May–September for swimming — Waimea Bay goes flat and the water inside the bay is clear and calm. Locals jump off the famous rock from about 30 feet into deep water.

Eat: Giovanni's shrimp truck (Haleʻiwa, cash only, line out the door). Ted's Bakery (Sunset Beach, plate lunches and cream pies). Kua ʻAina Sandwich (Haleʻiwa, one of the best burgers in Hawaii).

Skip: The ABC Store in Haleʻiwa. Everything is 30% cheaper in Waikīkī.

Kailua & the Windward Coast — Best Beach Day

Drive time: 30 minutes over the Pali Highway (H-3 or Nuʻuanu Pali Drive).

Kailua Beach is the best all-around beach on Oʻahu — 2.5 miles of white sand, turquoise water, trade winds, and a kayak-to-the-Mokes option that most tourists never find. The Mokulua Islands sit a 45-minute paddle offshore and have a white sand beach on the side facing Kailua.

What to do: Rent kayaks or paddleboards at Kailua Beach Adventures or Twogood Kayaks. Paddle to the Mokes (the "Twin Islands" visible from the beach). Swim the lagoon on the far side. Paddle back.

After: Drive 10 minutes south to Waimānalo Beach — the longest white sand beach on Oʻahu, almost always uncrowded, warm and protected. Local plate lunch at Keneke's in Waimānalo.

Lanikai: A short walk or bike ride south of Kailua Beach, Lanikai is a neighborhood beach at the end of residential streets. Finest sand on Oʻahu. No facilities, limited parking. Go early.

Pearl Harbor — Half-Day History

Drive time: 30 minutes west on H-1.

Pearl Harbor is the most-visited site in Hawaii that has nothing to do with the beach. The USS Arizona Memorial, Battleship Missouri, and the Pacific Aviation Museum are all here.

What to do: The USS Arizona Memorial is the centerpiece — a white concrete structure built over the sunken battleship, free, operated by the National Park Service. Book timed-entry passes in advance at recreation.gov — same-day availability is rare in peak season.

How long: Arizona Memorial alone takes 2 hours (boat ride + museum + memorial). Adding Battleship Missouri takes another 90 minutes ($31/adult). Full Pearl Harbor complex = half-day minimum.

Practical: Get here by 7:30 AM (the complex opens at 7:00). Afternoon lines stretch 2 hours. No bags larger than a small daypack allowed.

Hanauma Bay — Best Oʻahu Snorkel

Drive time: 25 minutes east of Waikīkī on H-1 to Kalaniana'ole Hwy.

Protected marine sanctuary, 40-foot coral reef, 400+ fish species. The most reliable snorkel experience on Oʻahu by a significant margin.

Reservations required: $25/person, book at hanaumabaystatepark.com. Walk-in capacity is extremely limited. The park is closed Tuesdays.

The experience: A mandatory 9-minute orientation video, then a short downhill walk to the bay. The beach is wide and sandy. Snorkel rentals available at the top before you descend. Fish approach close — they're accustomed to snorkelers.

Best time: Arrive for the first entry window (7 AM) for the calmest water and least crowding. Conditions deteriorate after 10 AM as trade winds pick up.

The Pali Lookout & Manoa Valley — Quick Half-Day

Drive time: 15 minutes from Waikīkī to Manoa Valley; 20 minutes to the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout.

Manoa Falls Trail: 1.6 miles round-trip through a lush rainforest valley to a 150-foot waterfall. Gets muddy — wear shoes you don't mind ruining. Mosquito repellent essential. Parking at the trailhead ($5).

Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout: A sheer 1,000-foot cliff with a view of the entire Windward Coast spread below. Wind routinely hits 40+ mph at the railing (it's geological — the cliff funnels trade winds). 10 minutes, free with park entry fee.

Combine: Manoa Falls in the morning (cooler, less crowded) + Pali Lookout on the drive back = a good 3-hour morning before hitting the beach.

Kaʻiʻwi Scenic Coastline — The Underrated Drive

Drive time: 30 minutes east on H-1 to Kalanianaoʻle Hwy.

Drive east past Hanauma Bay and continue along the Kaʻiʻwi Coast. Sandy Beach (powerful shore break, bodyboarders only), Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail (2.5 miles round-trip on a paved path, whale watching December–April from the cliff), and Sea Life Park. Offshore: Rabbit Island (Mānana Island), a bird sanctuary that looks exactly like a rabbit.

This stretch of coastline has no resorts, no overdevelopment, and the most dramatic ocean views accessible by road on Oʻahu. Turn around at Sea Life Park and head back.

Logistics

Car rental: Necessary for all of these except Hanauma Bay (TheBus Route 22 runs from Waikīkī). Avoid renting a car in Waikīkī — the hotel rates are 40% higher. Pick up at the airport.

Parking: Free at most North Shore spots. $5 at Manoa Falls and Makapuʻu. Kailua has a free beach park lot. Pearl Harbor has free parking at the complex.

Fuel: Fill up outside Waikīkī. The stations on Kūhiō Ave are the most expensive on the island.
