Biography
The Brothers Cazimero were a Hawaiian musical duo of brothers Robert Cazimero (bass, piano, and vocals) and Roland Cazimero (twelve-string guitar and vocals). Raised in the Kalihi neighborhood of Honolulu, Oʻahu, and educated at the Kamehameha Schools, the pair became prominent during the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s. They first recorded as members of ukulele and slack-key guitarist Peter Moon's group The Sunday Manoa, appearing on its album Guava Jam, before launching their own duo in 1975 and releasing a self-titled debut album that year.
Over the following decades the Cazimeros became fixtures of Hawaiian music. For many years they headlined an annual Lei Day (May 1) concert, and in 1989 they made their Carnegie Hall debut. They recorded prolifically for labels including Music of Polynesia and The Mountain Apple Company. Robert Cazimero is also a noted kumu hula (hula teacher) who studied under Maiki Aiu Lake and founded the all-male hālau Nā Kamalei o Lililehua.
The duo earned wide recognition within Hawaiian music, including 25 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards from the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts and a Grammy nomination for Best Hawaiian Music Album for the album Some Call It Aloha...Don't Tell. In 2006 they were inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. Roland Cazimero died on July 16, 2017, at the age of 66, bringing the partnership to a close; Robert has continued to perform and teach hula.
