Biography
Cecilio & Kapono (often abbreviated C&K) were a Hawaiian pop duo formed in Honolulu in 1973 by Cecilio David Rodriguez (born January 1945) and Henry Kapono Kaʻaihue, who performs as Henry Kapono (born September 21, 1948). Blending acoustic-driven pop and soft rock with Hawaiian sensibilities, they became one of the island acts of the 1970s and, per Kapono's account, were the first Hawaiʻi group to sign a national recording contract, with Columbia Records. Their self-titled debut was released in 1974.
The duo followed the debut with Elua (1975) and Night Music (1977) on Columbia, and continued to record over subsequent decades on a series of labels, with later titles including Life's Different Now (1979), Summerlust (1992) and Goodtimes Together (1995). Their catalog moves through pop, soul, funk and traditional Hawaiian material. Their harmony-driven sound was described by The New York Times as 'Hawaii's answer to Simon and Garfunkel.'
In 2009 Cecilio & Kapono received the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts Lifetime Achievement Award for their work as a duo. Henry Kapono has continued as a prolific solo artist and Hawaiian music figure, while the duo's catalog remains widely associated with the sound of 1970s Hawaiʻi.
