Biography
George Brooks Veikoso (born May 10, 1970; died July 2025), known professionally as Fiji, was a Fijian singer-songwriter, musician, and producer who built his career in Hawaiʻi. He was born in Fiji's Tailevu Province and raised in the Raiwaqa area of Suva, and moved to Hawaiʻi with his family in 1987 following the 1987 Fijian coups. He grew up singing in church and, after settling in the islands, became associated with the local contemporary Hawaiian and reggae scene, including early work with the Hawaiian Style Band.
Fiji released his debut album, Evolution, in 1994, and his 1996 album Born and Raised broadened his recognition across the Pacific. Over the following decades he recorded numerous albums and became known for songs such as "Lia," "Sweet Darlin'," and "Let Me Be the One," the last co-written and performed as a theme for the Baywatch television series (Baywatch: Hawaii). He also appeared in the 2002 surfing film Blue Crush. His music blended reggae with R&B, soul, and Pacific Island sounds.
Widely described as a pioneer of island reggae, Fiji mentored and influenced later Pacific and Hawaiʻi artists including J Boog, Maoli, and Common Kings. In his later years he performed while managing health problems, at times appearing in a wheelchair. He died in July 2025 at age 55 in Suva, Fiji. Following his death he was mourned across Hawaiʻi and the wider Pacific.
