Biography

Nā Leo Pilimehana is a Hawaiian female vocal trio formed in 1984 by three friends attending Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu: Nalani Jenkins, Lehua Kalima, and Angela Morales (also referred to in 2024 Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame coverage as Angela Escontrias). Their music and hula instructor at Kamehameha Schools, Holoʻua Stender, gave the group its name in 1983, meaning "the voices blending together in warmth"; it is often shortened to Nā Leo, "the voices." As high school seniors in 1984, they entered the "Brown Bags to Stardom" talent competition at the Waikīkī Shell with an original composition, "Local Boys," and won, which led to the song becoming their debut single and album title.

"Local Boys" became one of the best-selling singles in the history of the Hawaiian music industry, launching the trio's professional recording career. Over the following decades Nā Leo Pilimehana released more than twenty albums; the group's own promotional materials describe it as the top-selling female Hawaiian music group, though that figure is not independently audited. Their sound is generally categorized as Hawaiian Contemporary, blending traditional Hawaiian themes and three-part vocal harmony with pop and adult-contemporary arrangements. Albums include Local Boys (1984), Friends (1993), Flying with Angels (1995), Colours (1998), Pocketful of Smiles (1999), Find Your Light (2004), and Beautiful Day (2018); the group signed with Sony Music Entertainment Japan in 1996 and again in 2019.

The trio has won more than twenty Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards — Hawaiʻi's recording-arts awards, presented by the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts — across categories including Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Group of the Year. In 2024, the group marked its 40th anniversary with concert dates and was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame as part of the 2024 class, honored at the Hall's "Lei of Stars" ceremony on October 27, 2024, at the ʻAlohilani Resort Waikīkī Beach. The group's official website states the trio went on hiatus as of May 1, 2026.
