Helicopter Tours in Hawaii

Nā Pali sea cliffs from the ocean side. Kīlauea crater from inside. Haleakalā above the clouds. Things only visible from 2,000 feet.

A helicopter shows you the Hawaiʻi that doesn't have roads. The interior of Kauaʻi — rain-fed valleys, 5,000-foot ridgelines, waterfalls without names — is some of the most remote terrain in the United States. You cannot hike there. You cannot boat there. You can only fly.

Kauaʻi is the definitive helicopter experience in Hawaiʻi. The island's interior is the wettest spot on Earth (Mount Waialeale, 450+ inches of rain annually) and completely inaccessible on foot. Blue Hawaiian, Jack Harter, and Maverick all run excellent Kauaʻi tours. Doors-off flights are available and worth the $50 upcharge — the photos are dramatically better and the sensation is completely different.

Maui tours cover the Hāna coast, Haleakalā, and the west Maui mountains. The Road to Hāna from the air takes 20 minutes instead of 3 hours and shows waterfalls, sea cliffs, and black sand beaches you'd miss driving. Big Island helicopters are the best option if Kīlauea is actively erupting — lava at night from a helicopter is one of the most spectacular things humans have arranged.

Motion sickness is real in a helicopter. They are small, you will feel every bank, and the turbulence from hot volcanic terrain can be pronounced. Take Dramamine (not the drowsy kind) one hour before if you're prone. The pilot can slow things down if you ask.

Common questions

Which island has the best helicopter tour?

Kauaʻi. The interior is inaccessible any other way and the scenery is unlike anything else in the US. If Kīlauea is erupting, Big Island is a close second for sheer drama.

Doors-off or doors-on?

Doors-off gives better photos and a much more immediate sensation. You're harnessed in, no risk of falling, but the wind noise requires headsets. Worth the upcharge (~$50-70) if photography matters.

How long is a tour?

Kauaʻi: 50-65 minutes ($270-350/person). Maui: 45-65 minutes ($250-320). Big Island: 45-60 minutes ($260-350). Skip anything under 45 minutes — you spend 10+ minutes just leaving the airport.

Book in advance?

Yes — at least 1-2 weeks out in peak season (June-August, Dec-Jan). Kauaʻi doors-off slots fill fastest. If weather cancels your flight (common in Kauaʻi winter), most operators reschedule or refund.
