Ziplining in Hawaii

Ziplining in Hawaii

Fly above taro fields, rainforest canopy, and ocean cliffs — Hawaii's steep volcanic ridges make for some of the most dramatic zip lines in the country.

Zipline operators figured out early that Hawaii's topography — steep valleys, 3,000-foot ridges dropping to the sea — makes for naturally dramatic lines. Most courses string 5-8 lines across multiple ridges, finishing with an ocean or valley view that's the real product.

Maui has the densest concentration of operators: Pi'iholo Ranch above Makawao runs 5 lines above upcountry farmland with Maui's north coast spread below. Kapalua Zipline sends you over the north Maui coast toward Molokaʻi. Flyin Hawaiian operates lines in west Maui pineapple fields.

Oʻahu's ClimbWorks at Keana Farms runs 8 lines above the North Shore surf coast — you can see surfers at Sunset Beach from 300 feet up. Ko Olina Zipline on the west side is more resort-casual, 5 lines, better for first-timers.

Kauaʻi: Just Live Adventures runs lines above a 1,000-foot Kīlauea valley. Big Island: Kohala Zip above Parker Ranch is the longest line in Hawaii — 3,600 feet of steel cable across a 35,000-acre ranch.

Common questions

Weight limits?

Most operators: minimum 70-80 lbs (roughly age 7+), maximum 250-280 lbs. Call ahead if you're near the limits — some operators have higher maximums.

What to wear?

Closed-toe shoes are required at every operator — they'll send you home in flip-flops. Shorts or pants are fine. Hair tie if you have long hair (helmet goes on). Leave big earrings and loose jewelry in the car.

How long does a tour take?

Most tours are 2.5-4 hours including safety briefing, ATV or van transport between lines, and the lines themselves. Book the morning departure if possible — afternoon clouds can cut views.

Best for first-timers?

Ko Olina Zipline (Oʻahu, gentle, well-staffed) or Maui Zipline Company (shorter lines, less intense). First-timers tend to white-knuckle the first line regardless of how long it is — the shorter starter lines build more confidence faster.
