Parasailing in Hawaii

Parasailing in Hawaii

800 feet above the ocean with Waikiki, the West Maui mountains, or Kauaʻi's Na Pali below you — the islands look completely different from a parasail.

Parasailing lifts you on a parachute towed by a boat — no swimming required, no experience needed. You're harnessed into a seat harness on the back deck of the boat, the chute inflates behind you, and you lift off smoothly. The flight lasts 8-12 minutes per person at 800-1,200 feet altitude, and you descend gently back to the deck.

The views are genuinely different from what you see at ground level or even from a zipline. You're above the reef lines looking down at the color gradients in the water. In Waikīkī you see the full Honolulu skyline and Diamond Head simultaneously. Off Maui you see Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi in the distance.

Tandem (two people on one chute) is available at most operators — the chute is bigger and can handle the combined weight. Some operators also offer triple. Couples almost always do tandem; it doesn't change the experience much and you get photos together.

Waikīkī's parasail boats depart from Kewalo Basin, about a 5-minute walk from most hotels. Maui boats depart from Lāhainā Harbor and Kāʻanapali Beach. Kauaʻi operates out of Port Allen on the south shore.

Common questions

Is it scary?

Most people say less scary than expected. The liftoff is smooth (no jump required). The height is real — 800-1,200 feet — but you're seated and harnessed, and the swinging motion is gentle. People who are afraid of roller coasters usually handle parasailing fine.

Weight limits?

Solo minimum: ~100 lbs. Tandem: minimum 130 lbs combined, maximum 450-500 lbs combined. Call the operator if you're near the limits; some boats have higher maximums.

Best Oʻahu operator?

UFO Parasail (Kewalo Basin, Waikīkī, large fleet, runs all day, $75-95). X-treme Parasail (same basin, competitive pricing). Walk to either from Ala Moana area hotels.

Best conditions?

Morning flights before the afternoon trade winds increase. Calmer water = smoother liftoff and landing from the back of the boat. Afternoon is fine but slightly more turbulent.
