ATV & UTV Tours in Hawaii

Working cattle ranches, old sugar-plantation land, waterfall valleys — Hawaii's back-country opens up fast once you're on four wheels.

Most Hawaii ATV/UTV tours run on private working ranches rather than public land — Kīpu Ranch (Kauaʻi), Kohala's old sugar-plantation acreage (Big Island), and West Maui watershed country all opened their back trails to guided tours precisely because they're otherwise inaccessible.

Vehicles split into two types: true ATVs (straddle-seat, solo rider, more common on Kauaʻi and Maui) and UTVs / side-by-sides (bucket seats, seatbelts, 2-4 riders, now the majority of the fleet statewide). Either way, a valid driver's license and a minimum age (usually 16-18 to drive, younger to ride passenger) are required.

Terrain ranges from red-dirt ranch pasture to river crossings, waterfall stops, and coastal bluffs — several tours (Kohala, Waipiʻo) run along working cattle operations, so expect livestock gates, mud, and a real safety briefing, not a theme-park ride.

Common questions

Which island has the best ATV tour?

Kauaʻi's Kīpu Ranch Adventures is the island's sole operator and arguably the best-known name in the state — waterfall trail + working-ranch scenery in one loop. Big Island has the most operator choice (Kohala, Waipiʻo, Hilo-area farms). Oʻahu's options (Kualoa Ranch, Coral Crater, North Shore) lean more theme-park/film-location than backcountry.

ATV or UTV — which should I book?

UTV/side-by-side if you're traveling with a non-driving passenger or want the seatbelt-and-roll-cage safety margin. Solo ATV if you want to actually drive yourself through the trail rather than ride along.

What should I wear/bring?

Closed-toe shoes are mandatory (most operators turn away sandals). Expect to get muddy — wear clothes you don't mind ruining. Sunglasses or the provided goggles are worth using; red dirt does not come out of contacts easily.

Any operators to double check before booking?

Hawaii's ATV scene has had real closures — Kauaʻi's original 25-year operator, Kauai ATV, shut down in a 2025 lease dispute, and Maui's Kahoma Ranch ATV has also closed. If a tour looks unusually cheap or you can't find recent reviews, call ahead before paying.
