Best Scuba Diving in Hawaii 2026 — For Beginners and Experienced Divers

Hawaii Diving: What Makes It Different

Hawaii is not the Caribbean. Visibility is excellent — 60 to 100 feet on good days — but the water is cooler (75-80 degrees F in summer, 72-75 degrees F in winter) and the marine life is unlike anywhere else. About 25% of Hawaii's reef fish species exist nowhere else on Earth. You will see Hawaiian green sea turtles on almost every dive, endemic fish, healthy lava tube systems, and — if you time it right — manta rays in the dark.

Hanauma Bay: Best for Snorkeling and Intro Divers

Hanauma Bay on Oahu is protected as a marine life conservation district. Entry is $25 per person (free for Hawaii residents and children under 12). Online reservations are required and often sell out the day they open — book at honolulu.gov/parks/hanauma. The bay is closed Tuesdays. No scuba operators run trips here; it is primarily a snorkeling site, but the shallow reef is exceptional and visibility is typically 30-40 feet inside the bay. Gear rental is available on-site.

Shark's Cove, North Shore Oahu: Lava Tubes and Reef

Shark's Cove is one of Oahu's best shore-dive sites when conditions allow. It is located at Pupukea Beach Park on the North Shore and is best diveable April through September when the north swell subsides. At low tide, the cove is accessible for tidepooling. At high tide with calm seas, certified divers can explore lava tubes reaching 30-45 feet. No fee, but the parking lot at Pupukea is small. Dive shops in Haleiwa and Honolulu run guided shore dives here.

Molokini Crater, Maui: Best Visibility in the State

Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater about 3 miles off Maui's south coast. The crescent shape blocks current on the inside, creating calm water with visibility regularly exceeding 100 feet. The back wall drops 300 feet and draws experienced divers. Most Maui dive operators run two-tank trips here: Maui Dive Shop, Mike Severns Diving, and Lahaina Divers all have established routes. Expect to pay $130-$180 for a two-tank boat dive including all gear. The inside of the crater is beginner-friendly; the back wall is for certified advanced divers.

Molokini is a state marine life conservation district — no touching coral, no taking anything. Boats are required to use mooring buoys; no anchoring is allowed.

Cathedrals, Lanai: Best Dive Site in Hawaii

The Cathedrals off Lanai's south coast — two interconnected lava tube systems — are considered by most Hawaii dive instructors to be the best dive in the state. Light filters through openings in the lava ceiling, creating cathedral-like columns of light inside the tubes. Depths range from 15 to 60 feet. You access Lanai Cathedrals by boat from Lahaina Harbor on Maui (40-minute crossing) or from Lanai Harbor. Trilogy Excursions and Maui Dive Shop run regular trips. Budget $160-$200 for a two-tank trip including boat transit.

Kona Manta Ray Night Dive: The Bucket List Item

The manta ray night dive off the Kona Coast on the Big Island is one of the most reliable wildlife encounters on the planet. Pacific manta rays — wingspans up to 14 feet — congregate nightly at Garden Eel Cove near the Kona airport, drawn by dive operators who set up underwater lights that attract plankton. Divers kneel on the sand at 35 feet holding lights while mantas do barrel rolls directly overhead, sometimes within inches. Snorkelers can participate from the surface.

Average price: $140-$160 for certified divers, $90-$110 for snorkelers. Book at least a week ahead — this tour operates almost every night and sells out. Kona Honu Divers, Jack's Diving Locker, and Kona Diving Company all run reliable operations. Do not touch the mantas — oils from human skin damage their protective mucus layer.

Certification and Gear Basics

No certification? Most operators offer Discover Scuba experiences (supervised single dives for non-certified divers) at sites like Molokini inside crater or off Kona. Cost: $100-$130. Water temperature: A 3mm wetsuit is sufficient May-October. 5mm recommended November-April, especially on night dives. Book ahead: The manta dive and Molokini trips are the two that sell out most consistently. Assume you need a reservation 7-14 days out in peak season.
