Christmas in Hawaii: A Different Kind of December
Christmas in Hawaii is the same holiday you know — with an ocean breeze, 78°F temperatures, and palm trees strung with lights. It is also, genuinely, one of the most beautiful times of year in the islands. The combination of warm tropical evenings, glittering holiday lights, and the Hawaiian cultural tradition of Mele Kalikimaka (the Hawaiian phonetic rendering of "Merry Christmas," made famous by Bing Crosby) creates a holiday atmosphere that is entirely its own.
Honolulu City Lights
The centerpiece of Hawaii's Christmas season is Honolulu City Lights, the annual holiday display at Honolulu Hale (Honolulu City Hall) in downtown Honolulu. The celebration runs from early December through New Year's and features:
- The giant Christmas tree in front of Honolulu Hale — one of the largest in the state, decorated in an elaborate theme that changes each year
- A citywide light display surrounding the civic center campus; thousands of lights, illuminated sculptures, and themed vignettes fill the grounds
- The Shaka Santa and Tutu Mele (a Hawaiian Mrs. Claus) figures — beloved local characters unique to Honolulu City Lights
- Live entertainment on a stage near the main entrance; performances run nightly including hula, Hawaiian Christmas carols, and local music groups
- Free admission; open nightly from early December through the first week of January, typically until 10pm
Honolulu City Lights draws enormous crowds — weekend evenings can see 10,000+ visitors. Visit on a weekday evening, or arrive early (6pm) on weekends to avoid peak congestion.
Christmas on the Beach
One of the most memorable experiences available in Hawaii is spending Christmas morning on the beach. At Waikiki, Kailua, and beaches across the islands, families gather on Christmas morning for a tradition that combines the holiday with the most Hawaiian of settings. Some families set up small artificial trees in the sand; others wear Santa hats into the surf.

Hawaiian Holiday Traditions
- Mele Kalikimaka: "Merry Christmas" in Hawaiian — the greeting on every card, in every shop, on every radio station in December. Bing Crosby's 1950 recording made it famous worldwide.
- Holiday lei: Just as flowers mark every celebration in Hawaii, Christmas is accompanied by red and green lei — carnation lei in holiday colors are a favorite
- Christmas plate lunch: Hawaii's unique contribution to holiday food — a Christmas kalua turkey plate with poi, lomi salmon, and haupia from a local restaurant or family lu'au
