First Friday Honolulu Art Walk Guide — Chinatown Galleries, Music, Food
What First Friday Actually Is
Despite the name, First Friday in Honolulu happens on the last Friday of every month. It is an art walk and street event centered on the Chinatown gallery district, running from around 5pm to 9-10pm. Galleries open their doors, some have receptions with drinks, musicians play on the street, food vendors set up, and several thousand people walk the neighborhood together. It is free, it is festive, and it is the best single evening event in Honolulu for seeing the city as it actually lives.
The Route
Most people start on Hotel Street near the Hawaii Theatre and work their way toward Nuuanu Avenue and the surrounding blocks. The core of the walk is roughly:
- Hawaii Theatre (1130 Bethel St) — a restored 1922 beaux-arts theater that often has shows in conjunction with First Friday
- Louis Pohl Gallery (1111 Nuuanu Ave) — the anchor gallery of the district, showing works by Louis Pohl and curated contemporary Hawaiian artists
- Pegge Hopper Gallery (1164 Nuuanu Ave) — long-running Honolulu gallery showing Hopper's iconic Hawaiian women paintings and guest exhibitions
- Chinatown Cultural Plaza along River Street — periodic events and installations
- Multiple pop-up galleries and artist studios on Bethel, Hotel, and Pauahi streets
Food and Drink During First Friday
Chinatown has some of Honolulu's best restaurants within walking distance of the gallery route. Plan around these:
- Fete on Pauahi Street — upscale farm-to-table Hawaiian, book a reservation
- Lucky Belly on Hotel Street — ramen and bar, locally beloved, often full on First Fridays
- Livestock Tavern — cocktail bar with a sophisticated food program in a historic space
- Mag the Vizla — craft beer bar with a relaxed crowd and outdoor seating
- Food trucks and vendors set up along Hotel Street and Nuuanu Ave specifically for First Friday
The Chinatown bars fill up as the evening progresses. Arrive early for dinner reservations at destination restaurants or eat before 6pm to avoid the wait.
Music During First Friday
Live music is everywhere during First Friday — on sidewalks, in gallery courtyards, and at the bars. Local bands play everything from Hawaiian contemporary to jazz to indie rock. The Chinatown bars along Hotel Street keep music going until midnight. The Hawaii Theatre has ticketed shows that sometimes align with First Friday.
Tips for First Friday
- Arrive before 7pm. The best gallery crowds and the most relaxed street scene happen in the first two hours.
- Bring cash for food vendors and any galleries with merchandise.
- Parking in Chinatown is challenging on First Friday. Consider TheBus, Lyft, or parking at a nearby lot and walking in.
- Dress comfortably — you will be walking for two to three hours.
- Check AlohaCalendar the week before to see which galleries have opening receptions that evening — these are often the most social and lively stops on the walk.
- If you are bringing children, the early part of the evening (5-7pm) is family-friendly. By 8pm the crowd skews older and the bars dominate.
First Friday in Honolulu is Chinatown's monthly art walk and street festival, held the first Friday of every month from roughly 5pm to 10pm. Galleries open late, restaurants run specials, live music spills into the streets, and the whole neighborhood comes alive. It is one of the best free things you can do on a Friday night on Oahu — but only if you know how to navigate it.
