Pearl Harbor Visitor Guide 2026 — Tickets, Tips & What to Expect
Planning Your Pearl Harbor Visit
Pearl Harbor is Hawaii's most-visited historical site and one of the most significant in all of American history. The Pearl Harbor Historic Sites encompass four separate attractions on and around Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, about 9 miles west of Waikiki. A full visit takes 4-6 hours; most visitors prioritize the USS Arizona Memorial and at least one other attraction.
The Four Historic Sites
- USS Arizona Memorial: The centerpiece of Pearl Harbor. A white marble-and-concrete structure built over the sunken hull of the battleship USS Arizona, which sank on December 7, 1941 with 1,177 crew members aboard. 1,102 remain entombed in the hull. Accessible only by U.S. Navy shuttle boat; includes a 23-minute film. Free with timed-entry ticket.
- USS Missouri Battleship: The "Mighty Mo" — the Iowa-class battleship on whose deck Japan formally surrendered on September 2, 1945. Walk the teak decks, see the plaque marking the surrender spot. Separate admission (~$34 adults / $17 children).
- USS Bowfin Submarine Museum: Tour a WWII-era Balao-class submarine, the "Pearl Harbor Avenger," which completed 12 war patrols and sank 44 enemy ships. Separate admission (~$20 adults).
- Pacific Aviation Museum: Located in two historic hangars on Ford Island, still bearing bullet holes from December 7th. Extensive WWII aircraft collection including a Japanese Zero. Separate admission (~$30 adults).
Tickets and Reservations
The USS Arizona Memorial program operates on timed-entry tickets only, available at recreation.gov. Book days or weeks in advance — walk-up tickets are sometimes available but not guaranteed. Combination tickets (Road to Victory pass) cover all four sites at a discount.
Getting There
- From Waikiki by car: H1 West to Exit 15A (Arizona Memorial/Stadium), follow signs to Kamehameha Highway; approximately 25-35 minutes without traffic. Free parking at the visitor center.
- TheBus: Route 20 from Waikiki; $3 fare, stops at the visitor center.
- Guided tours: Many Waikiki hotels offer Pearl Harbor day tours with transportation included. Convenient but more expensive than self-guided.
What to Expect at the Visitor Center
The visitor center is free to enter and houses the Road to War exhibit — comprehensive coverage of the events leading to December 7, 1941 — the Attack exhibit with moment-by-moment account and artifacts, photographs, and survivor accounts, the Wall of Honor listing all 2,403 names of those killed on December 7th, and a food court, gift shop, and outdoor areas overlooking the harbor.
Practical Tips
- Arrive early: Open at 7am; first boat to the Arizona Memorial is around 8am
- Allow a full day: If you want to see all four sites, plan 5-6 hours minimum
- Dress appropriately: The Arizona Memorial is a national memorial and an active military cemetery — dress and behave accordingly. No swimwear.
- Bags policy: No bags inside the memorial program building. Lockers available for a small fee. Leave large bags in your car.
- Respect the location: The USS Arizona is an active war grave. Speaking quietly and following crew instructions are expected.
Pearl Harbor is the most visited attraction in Hawaii, drawing over 1.8 million visitors each year to the shores of Oahu. But this is not a typical tourist stop. It is a place of profound historical significance, a memorial to the 2,403 Americans who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a veteran, or a first-time visitor to Hawaii, a trip to Pearl Harbor deserves thoughtful planning.
