Sunset on the Beach Waikīkī: Free Movies + Concerts (2026)
Free Movies on the Beach in Waikiki
One of the most beloved free events in Waikiki has been running since 1996: Sunset on the Beach sets up a massive outdoor movie screen on Queen's Beach, just east of the main Waikiki strip near Kapiolani Park, and broadcasts a film on Friday and Saturday evenings to anyone who shows up with a blanket.
The event is organized by the Hawaii Film Office and local sponsors. The screen is enormous — reportedly 30 feet wide — and the backdrop is the Pacific Ocean and a sky that transitions from golden to violet to deep blue as the movie plays. It's the kind of setting that makes even mediocre movies feel magical.
What to Expect
Gates typically open around 4:30–5pm. A live entertainment program runs from about 5–7pm, featuring local bands, hula performances, and occasional cultural demonstrations. The film itself usually begins around 7:30pm after sunset. Total event time is roughly 3–4 hours from opening to credits.
Admission is completely free. Bring your own seating: beach chairs, blankets, and low folding chairs are all appropriate. Stadium chairs (with backs higher than 18 inches) are generally not permitted because they block views. Food trucks and food vendors set up along the perimeter, and nearby restaurants on Kalakaua Ave are walkable if you want a proper meal before the film.
Schedule and Film Selection
Sunset on the Beach runs most Fridays and Saturdays year-round, though specific dates vary and are announced through the Hawaii Film Office website and social media. The film selection ranges from recent Hollywood releases to Hawaii-connected films and classics. Past screenings have included major superhero releases, animated family films, and films shot on location in Hawaii. The AlohaCalendar events calendar tracks upcoming Sunset on the Beach screenings — check the events listing before you go.
Where Exactly Is Queen's Beach?
Queen's Beach (officially the Queen's Surf Beach) is at the eastern end of Waikiki, past the Waikiki Aquarium and the natatorium. The address most GPS systems accept is near 2777 Kalakaua Ave. It's walkable from most Waikiki hotels in 15–20 minutes along the beachfront path, or a short Uber from anywhere on the strip. Parking at the Honolulu Zoo lot across the street is $1/hour, though it fills up on event nights.
Live Music at Waikiki
Beyond Sunset on the Beach, Waikiki has a strong free and low-cost live music culture throughout the week. The Kuhio Beach Hula Show at Kuhio Beach Bandstand runs Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings at 6:30pm and features traditional hula and live Hawaiian music — completely free, with torch lighting and a ceremony. This is one of the most authentically Hawaiian cultural experiences available in Waikiki at no cost.
The Royal Hawaiian Center's open-air stage on Kalakaua Avenue hosts free hula and music performances several nights a week, with the schedule posted at their front desk and on their website. The performances range from beginner hula to professional-level shows.
Dueling pianos, live bands, and DJ nights are spread across the bars and hotels on Kalakaua: Duke's Waikiki at the Outrigger Reef has live music most evenings at the beachfront bar; House Without a Key at the Halekulani is the most elegant setting for live Hawaiian music, with hula dancers performing at sunset nightly against the backdrop of a 100-year-old kiawe tree and the ocean.
