Maui in early June is hitting its stride. The whale season has ended, summer crowds haven't peaked yet, and the island's steady trade winds keep temperatures comfortable. Here's what's on this week across Central Maui, the Valley Isle's resort corridor, and Upcountry.
Upcountry Farmers Market — Saturday, June 7
The Upcountry Farmers Market at Eddie Tam Memorial Center in Makawao runs every Saturday from 7am to 11am. It's the best farmers market on Maui — growers from Kula's cool volcanic slopes bring strawberries, mixed lettuces, Kula onions, Maui lavender products, fresh herbs, passionfruit, starfruit, and orchids. The atmosphere is local and unhurried, with farmers who can tell you exactly how and where each item was grown. Arrive by 8am for the best selection.
Maui Swap Meet — Saturday, June 7
The Maui Swap Meet at University of Hawaii Maui College in Kahului is open every Saturday from 7am to 1pm. The swap meet is part farmers market, part craft fair, part community gathering — you'll find fresh produce, aloha shirts, homemade jams, Filipino foods including fresh lumpia, and handmade jewelry alongside the secondhand goods. Admission is a nominal fee ($1). It's the most authentically local event you can attend on Maui and one of the best bang-for-dollar options on the island.
Ho'okipa Beach Park — Daily
Ho'okipa Beach Park on the North Shore near Paia is the global center of windsurfing culture, and in June it's at its most active — summer brings reliable south swells and cross-shore trade winds that make the reef break challenging and spectacular for board sports. The bluff above the beach offers free viewing of professional windsurfers and kitesurfers ripping across the wave face. Ho'okipa is also where Maui's green sea turtle population hauls out in the late afternoon — the turtles congregate on the west end of the beach as the day cools. Stay 10 feet back and let them rest.
Road to Hana — Any Day This Week
The week of June 5 is a good window for the Road to Hana before summer crowds peak. The 64-mile highway winds along Maui's northeastern coast through rainforest, over 56 one-lane bridges, and past waterfalls, black sand beaches, and bamboo groves. Key stops include the Garden of Eden Arboretum (mile marker 10.5, ticketed), the Ke'anae Arboretum (free, mile marker 17), and the Wailua Falls lookout (free, visible from the road). Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach, sea caves, coastal trail) requires advance reservation and a fee at gostateparks.hawaii.gov — book before your trip. The drive takes 2–3 hours without stops; with stops, plan for a full day.
Lahaina Arts Scene
Lahaina's Front Street arts corridor continues its recovery with galleries, restaurants, and the historic Banyan Tree Park that survived the 2023 fires. The Old Lahaina Luau runs nightly on the waterfront (advance reservations essential; book weeks ahead at oldlahainaluau.com). The luau is widely considered the most authentic in the state, with cultural programming that precedes the feast and imu (underground oven) ceremony. Tickets run $135–$155 per adult. For something free, the Lahaina Banyan Court Park (adjacent to the Lahaina Courthouse) centers on an 1873 banyan tree covering nearly an acre — the largest banyan tree in the US.
Wailea and Kihei — Beach Week
The south and west shores of Maui have the calmest water in the islands in early summer. Kapalua Bay in West Maui and Ulua Beach in Wailea are both excellent for snorkeling — clear, relatively calm, with healthy coral heads and resident green sea turtles. Snorkel gear rentals are available at shops in Kihei and Lahaina. Keawakapu Beach at the north end of Wailea is a long, uncrowded stretch of white sand that's perfect for morning swimming before the sun gets high.
Maui Arts & Cultural Center
The Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului has performances scheduled this week — check mauiarts.org for current listings. The 1,200-seat Castle Theater and outdoor A&B Amphitheater host a full season of concerts, film screenings, and cultural programs. The MACC is the premiere indoor performance venue on Maui and the best place on the island to catch nationally touring artists.
