Best ATV and Off-Road Tours in Hawaii

AlohaCalendar|June 6, 2026

Off-Roading in Paradise

Hawaii's volcanic terrain — jagged lava fields, river-carved valleys, and muddy mountain tracks — is tailor-made for off-road adventures. ATV and UTV tours operate on several islands, and the settings range from working cattle ranches to former sugar plantation lands to wildlife sanctuaries. Here's where to go and what you're actually getting.

Kualoa Ranch — Oahu (Best on Oahu)

Location: Kaneohe Valley, Oahu — about 30 minutes north of Waikiki on the windward side.

Kualoa Ranch is the gold standard for ATV and UTV experiences on Oahu and arguably in all of Hawaii. The ranch encompasses nearly 4,000 acres of the Kaaawa Valley, with jungled ridgelines, mountain streams, and views of Kaneohe Bay from the upper trails. The backdrop is also one of the most cinematic landscapes in the country — Jurassic Park, Lost, Jumanji, and dozens of other films and TV shows have shot in this valley.

Kualoa offers both ATV (single-rider) and UTV (two-person side-by-side) tours, each approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours on the mountain trail. The ATV is more of a solo adventure; the UTV lets you bring a partner and covers more ground. Prices range from approximately $125–175 per person depending on vehicle type and tour length. Children as young as 8 can participate in the passenger seat of a UTV. Book at kualoa.com — weekends sell out 2–3 weeks in advance in peak season.

Kualoa Ranch Movie Site UTV Tour

If you're a film enthusiast, Kualoa's movie location UTV tour is the better option over the standard ATV loop. It covers the same terrain but stops at recognizable filming locations with photos and behind-the-scenes context. Seeing the valley that doubled as Isla Nublar in Jurassic Park while driving a UTV through it is, objectively, very fun.

Princeville Ranch — Kauai

Location: Hanalei Valley, North Shore Kauai.

Princeville Ranch Adventures runs UTV tours through 2,500 acres of working ranch land on Kauai's stunning North Shore. The terrain includes ridge trails with views of Hanalei Bay and the Namolokama peaks, river crossings, and dense tropical forest. The scenery here is exceptional even by Hawaii standards — this part of Kauai regularly appears in lists of the most beautiful places on earth. Tours run 2–3 hours. Book at princevilleranch.com. Price approximately $145–190 per person.

Hana Ranch — Maui

Location: Hana, East Maui.

For visitors making the Road to Hana trip, Hana Ranch offers ATV tours through pastureland and coastal trails in the remote eastern end of Maui. This is a smaller, less commercial operation than Kualoa, which gives it a more authentic working-ranch feel. The ocean views from the upper pasture are outstanding. Book in advance as capacity is limited.

Big Island Off-Road Adventures

The Big Island's combination of active lava fields, diverse elevation zones, and working cattle country (the Parker Ranch in Waimea is the largest privately-owned cattle ranch in the United States) creates some of the most dramatic off-road terrain in Hawaii. Several operators in the Waikoloa and Kohala areas offer UTV tours through lava fields and along coastal ranch tracks. The visual contrast of black lava against turquoise ocean and green ranch pasture makes Big Island off-roading visually unlike anything on the other islands.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Closed-toe shoes — sandals are not permitted on any ATV or UTV tour in Hawaii
  • Clothes you don't mind getting muddy — the trails are often wet
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses — most tours have significant exposed-sun segments
  • A bandana or dust cover for your mouth on dry-weather tours (especially Kualoa in summer)
  • A secure bag or vest pocket for your phone — cameras on lanyards are not safe at speed

Age and Weight Limits

Most ATV operators require drivers to be 16 or older with a valid driver's license. UTV passengers typically must be at least 8 years old. Weight limits vary by vehicle but are typically 250–350 lbs per seat. Verify limits when booking if relevant to your group.
