Ziplining in Hawaii: More Than Just the View

Hawaii's terrain — steep volcanic valleys, ridgeline forests, and ocean-view ridges — makes it one of the best zipline destinations in the world. The difference between a great zipline tour and a mediocre one comes down to three things: the length and height of the lines, the quality of the setting, and whether the guides actually know and share the story of the land underneath you. Here are the best options on the two most-visited islands.

CLIMB Works — North Shore Oahu (Best on Oahu)

Location: Kahuku, North Shore Oahu — about 45 minutes from Waikiki.

CLIMB Works operates a 9-line zipline course on a 57-acre working farm on the North Shore, combining ziplining with farm tours, rope bridges, and sustainable agriculture education. The lines themselves are solid — up to 1,000 feet long with views of the Koolau Range and the ocean in the distance — but the real differentiator is the farm experience: taro, coffee, tropical fruits, and the story of Hawaiian land stewardship woven into the tour. Tours run daily and take approximately 3 hours. Book at climbworks.com. Price is approximately $155–175 per person.

Kualoa Ranch Zipline (KUALOA X) — Kaneohe

Location: Kualoa Ranch, Kaneohe Valley, Oahu — about 30 minutes from Waikiki.

Kualoa Ranch is Oahu's most famous adventure ranch and the zipline experience here is set against one of the most dramatic backdrops on the island — the towering fluted cliffs of the Koolau Range with Kaneohe Bay visible in the distance below. Kualoa's ziplines are part of their broader adventure package ecosystem (which also includes ATVs, horseback riding, UTV tours, and movie location tours). The zipline-specific tour runs approximately 3 hours and includes 8 lines. Price: approximately $135–155 per person. Book at kualoa.com and note that Kualoa experiences sell out weeks ahead on weekends.

Skyline Hawaii — Haleakala, Maui (Best in the State)

Location: Kula, Maui — on the slopes of Haleakala volcano at around 4,000 feet elevation.

Skyline Eco-Adventures on Maui is widely regarded as the best ziplining experience in Hawaii. The 5-line course on Haleakala's slopes includes a 3,600-foot line — one of the longest in the state — with views of the ocean on both sides of the island on a clear day. The altitude means cooler temperatures and a completely different ecosystem than the beach-level tours. The guides are excellent and the lines are genuinely fast. Price: approximately $150–180 per person. Book at skylinehawaii.com.

Maui Zipline Company — Maui

Location: Upcountry Maui near Paia.

A smaller, more intimate operation than Skyline, Maui Zipline Company runs a 5-line course with strong guides and a focus on the agricultural history of the land. Better for those who want a less crowded, more personal experience. The lines are shorter than Skyline but the setting — surrounded by eucalyptus and ironwood forests with ocean views — is beautiful.

Kohala Zipline — Big Island

Location: Kohala Mountain, North Big Island.

The Kohala Zipline tour is set in the Kohala Mountains in a lush, moss-covered rainforest ecosystem that's completely unlike the beach-side setting of most other Hawaii zipline tours. The 8-line course includes a 700-foot suspension bridge, Tarzan swings, and rappels in addition to ziplines. The forest setting is exceptionally beautiful and the experience feels more like eco-adventure than tourist activity. Price: approximately $160–190 per person. Book at ziplinehawaii.com.

What to Know Before You Book

  • Most tours have weight limits (typically 70–250 lbs) — verify before booking if relevant
  • Closed-toe shoes are required on all tours; most operators won't let you on in sandals
  • Book 3–7 days ahead for weekday tours; 10–14 days ahead for weekend slots in peak season
  • Morning tours are generally better — less wind and lower chance of rain
  • Prices typically do not include gratuity; guides work hard and tips are appreciated
