Best Plate Lunch Spots on Oahu
The Best Plate Lunch on Oahu: A Local's List
Plate lunch is the working meal of Hawaii. Two scoops rice, one scoop macaroni salad, and a protein — typically teriyaki beef, kalua pig, shoyu chicken, or mahi-mahi. It is cheap, filling, and made fresh at hundreds of places across the island. Here are the spots worth driving to.
Rainbow Drive-In — Kapahulu Ave
Rainbow Drive-In at 3308 Kanaina Ave off Kapahulu has been serving plate lunches since 1961. The mixed plate is the reason to come — teriyaki beef, mahimahi, and one more protein, all over rice with mac salad. The prices are still grounded in a different era of Honolulu and the quality has not changed. This is the iconic plate lunch stop and it earns the reputation.
Helena's Hawaiian Food — Nuuanu
Helena's Hawaiian Food on North School Street won a James Beard Award and has been in business since 1946. The pipikaula (dried beef rib), lomi salmon, poi, and haupia (coconut pudding) represent the traditional Hawaiian side of plate lunch that most tourist spots do not serve. Open Tuesday through Friday only. Get there early — it sells out.
Ethel's Grill — Kalihi
Ethel's Grill in the Kalihi neighborhood is a true lunch counter that has operated since 1948. The saimin and oxtail soup are standouts, but it is the full plate lunch menu — hamburger steak, beef stew, teriyaki chicken — served over rice with mac salad that keeps a multi-generational clientele coming back. This is old Honolulu and it is worth the trip to Kalihi.
Highway Inn — Waipahu and Kakaako
Highway Inn has two locations: the original in Waipahu (operating since 1947) and a newer Kakaako spot. Both serve traditional Hawaiian plate lunches — laulau, kalua pig, poi, poke, and squid luau. The Kakaako location is more accessible for visitors. The food is made with care and without shortcuts. It is one of the best places on the island for traditional Hawaiian food in a sit-down setting.
Ono Hawaiian Foods — Kapahulu
Ono Hawaiian Foods on Kapahulu Ave is a tiny, no-frills spot that serves classic Hawaiian food: poi, lomi salmon, laulau, and kalua pig. It opens at 11am Tuesday through Saturday and closes when it sells out — often before 2pm. Bring cash. Arrive early. Order the combination plate to try multiple proteins.
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue — Multiple Locations
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue is the plate lunch chain that took the format to the mainland, and the Hawaii locations are still reliable. The chicken katsu plate is a consistent standout. Prices are fair and locations are everywhere — good for a quick, honest plate lunch when you are not near one of the destination spots.
Honolulu Kitchen — Kalihi
For dim sum and Chinese plate-style lunch, Honolulu Kitchen and the surrounding Kalihi restaurant cluster offer some of the best-value, most filling food on the island. Manapua (steamed buns), char siu pork, and noodle soups fill the menu at small family spots that have served the same neighborhood for generations.
Plate Lunch Order Guide
- Two scoops rice — always white rice, Japanese-style; this is non-negotiable
- Macaroni salad — creamy, mayo-heavy; the real version uses elbow pasta and just a few ingredients
- Teriyaki beef — grilled thin-cut beef in sweet soy marinade; the most popular protein
- Kalua pig — smoked and shredded pork cooked in an imu (earth oven); has a distinct smoky flavor
- Chicken katsu — Japanese-style breaded and fried chicken with tonkatsu sauce
- Laulau — pork and butterfish wrapped in taro leaves and steamed; rich and tender
