Hawaii Date Night Ideas 2026 — Romantic Things to Do on Oahu

Set the Scene for a Perfect Oahu Date Night

Oahu has a knack for turning an ordinary evening into something memorable. Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, impressing a first date, or just carving out quality time together, the island offers a mix of romance, adventure, and good food that's hard to beat anywhere in the world.

Watch the Sunset From a Rooftop Bar

Sky Waikiki at the International Market Place is the undisputed king of rooftop romance on Oahu. Perched on the 19th floor with a 360-degree view of Diamond Head, the Koolau Range, and the Pacific Ocean, it's the kind of place that makes every couple feel like they're in a movie. Arrive by 6:30pm to snag a table before the sun drops, and order the signature mai tai. Dress code is resort casual — no flip-flops.

For something more laid-back, the Genius Lounge in Waikiki offers craft cocktails and a cooler, dimly-lit vibe that feels less touristy and more like a neighborhood date spot.

Dinner With a View

For a splurge dinner, Nobu Honolulu in the Nobu Hotel Honolulu serves inventive Japanese-Peruvian cuisine with ocean views and an atmosphere that's equal parts stylish and romantic. The miso black cod is legendary. Reservations essential — book two to three weeks ahead.

If you prefer something closer to the water, Hoku's at the Kahala Hotel sits right on Kahala Beach, with floor-to-ceiling windows, weekend live music, and a menu that leans into Hawaiian regional cuisine. Less crowded than Waikiki options.

For a more casual but deeply local experience, try Helena's Hawaiian Food in Kalihi — a James Beard Award winner serving pipikaula short ribs and squid luau in a no-frills setting. No ocean view, but the food tells a story that no tourist trap can match.

Sunrise Hike Together

Waking up early for the Diamond Head Crater hike might sound like a strange date idea, but watching the sun rise over Waikiki from the summit is genuinely awe-inspiring. Book a sunrise slot (6am entry) at recreation.gov — permits are $5/car or $1 for walk-ins. Arrive at least 15 minutes early, wear layers, and bring a small blanket to sit on at the top.

The Lanikai Pillboxes offer a shorter, more accessible sunrise option. Park on Kaelepulu Drive and scramble up the 15-minute trail to reach two WWII pillboxes overlooking the Mokulua Islands. Bring coffee in a thermos and find a spot on the ridge before the crowds arrive around 7am.

A Beach Picnic Done Right

Lanikai Beach itself — just below those pillboxes — is consistently ranked one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and on a calm morning it lives up to the hype. Powdery white sand, turquoise calm water, and virtually no development in sight. Stop at Kalapawai Market in Kailua on the way to grab sandwiches, cheese, and a bottle of local sparkling water.

Surf Lessons for Two

A shared beginner surf lesson at Waikiki is one of the most fun and genuinely bonding activities on the island. Hans Hedemann Surf School and Waikiki Beach Boys both run two-hour group lessons that almost always result in at least a few successful rides — and a lot of laughing. Book the 8am slot to avoid afternoon crowds and heat.

Luau Night

The Paradise Cove Luau in Ko Olina and the Polynesian Cultural Center's Ali'i Luau on the North Shore are the two most well-regarded options on Oahu. Paradise Cove is more of an adults-evening event with an open bar, games, and a full imu ceremony. The Polynesian Cultural Center's luau pairs dinner with a world-class Polynesian revue show — longer drive from Waikiki but worth it if you're curious about Pacific Island cultures.

Late-Night Shave Ice Stroll

End any date night with a walk through Waikiki and a stop at Waiola Shave Ice on Mooheau Ave — open late and beloved by locals. Order the rainbow with coconut milk and azuki beans on the bottom, find a bench near the beach, and let the night wind down at its own pace.

Oahu date nights don't require big budgets or complicated plans. The island does most of the work — you just need to show up and be present.
