Hawaii Events April 2026 — Complete Guide to Festivals, Concerts & Things to Do

Why April Is One of Hawaii's Best Months to Visit

April sits in a sweet spot on Hawaii's calendar: winter's big-wave surf season has wound down, summer crowds haven't arrived, and the islands are green and lush from winter rains. Hotel rates are generally lower than Christmas or spring break peak. And April brings one of the most significant cultural events in the Pacific — the Merrie Monarch Festival — plus a full roster of outdoor markets, concerts, and ocean activities across all islands.

Merrie Monarch Festival — Hilo, Big Island (Week After Easter)

The Merrie Monarch Festival is the premier hula competition in the world, held in Hilo every year during the week after Easter Sunday. Named for King David Kalakaua, who revived Hawaiian arts and culture in the 19th century, the festival draws hula halau (schools) from across Hawaii and from the US mainland and Japan to compete in kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern) hula disciplines. Tickets to the three competition nights at the Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium sell out within minutes of going on sale — typically in January. However, the Thursday morning parade through downtown Hilo along Kamehameha Avenue is completely free, and it is magnificent: ornate floats, royal courts, and hula performers in full regalia winding through Hilo's charming bayfront district. The parade alone is worth the trip to the Big Island.

Kokua Festival — Honolulu (April)

Jack Johnson's annual Kokua Festival benefit concert at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall is one of the most coveted tickets in Hawaii. Proceeds benefit the Kokua Hawaii Foundation's farm-to-school and environmental education programs. The lineup features Jack Johnson plus a rotating roster of musician friends — past years have included Ben Harper, Ziggy Marley, and Eddie Vedder. Tickets sell out online within minutes of going on sale; follow @kokuafestival for announcement dates.

Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden — Kaneohe, Oahu

April's occasional showers keep the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe spectacularly lush. The 400-acre garden at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains is free and open daily (closed Tuesday and Wednesday). Bring a picnic, walk the lake trail, and watch the Ko'olau clouds build above the ridgeline in the afternoon. It's one of the most photogenic spots on Oahu and costs nothing. The garden also hosts occasional free cultural programs in spring — check the City and County of Honolulu parks calendar.

Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival — Big Island (April)

The mountain town of Waimea (Kamuela) on the Big Island hosts a cherry blossom festival in late winter/early spring when the Taiwanese cherry trees that line Church Row Park bloom pink. The festival is a community celebration with craft vendors, traditional foods, and entertainment at Church Row Park in the center of Waimea. April is also the best time for horseback riding on the Kohala Coast — the Parker Ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in the US, offers guided rides through the green Upcountry pastures before summer heat arrives.

Ocean Activities in April

Water conditions in April are transitional and excellent. The South Shore swells that make summer surfing possible haven't fully arrived, but the North Shore has settled down to safe, swimmable conditions. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve on Oahu opens its morning slots (reserve at honolulu.gov — required in advance) to snorkelers who can see green sea turtles, parrotfish, and giant Hawaiian grouper in the bay. On Maui, the last of the humpback whale season runs through late April — Pacific Whale Foundation's morning whale-watch cruises from Maalaea Harbor are worth booking for any April visit.

What to Expect Weather-Wise in April

April in Hawaii averages 78°F on Oahu's leeward side and can drop to the low 60s at Waimea and Upcountry Maui. The North and East shores of each island will see more rain than the leeward resort areas. April showers are typically brief and intense rather than all-day — mornings are usually sunny. Pack a light rain layer and reef-safe sunscreen, and plan outdoor hikes for morning hours.

Practical April Tips

  • Book Hanauma Bay snorkeling permits 1-2 weeks in advance at honolulu.gov
  • Reserve Merrie Monarch hotel rooms in Hilo 6+ months early — the entire city books out during festival week
  • Wai'anapanapa State Park (Maui) requires advance online reservations for the black sand beach — book before your trip
  • April car rental rates are moderate compared to summer and winter peaks — but book early on Big Island during Merrie Monarch week
