Best Surf Schools in Hawaii 2026 — Where to Learn by Island

Learn to Surf Where the Sport Was Born

Surfing was invented in Hawaii. The sport was practiced by Hawaiian royalty for centuries before Western contact, and the breaks at Waikiki Beach were the original proving grounds. Learning to surf in Hawaii isn't just a vacation activity — it's participation in something with deep roots in the place you're visiting. Here's where to do it right on each island.

Oahu: Waikiki (Best for Beginners)

Waikiki is the best place in the world to learn to surf. The waves at Canoes and Queens — the two famous beginner breaks directly in front of the hotels — are long, slow-rolling, and extremely forgiving. They break in waist-to-chest-high water, travel for hundreds of feet before closing out, and have been used for beginner lessons since the 1900s. The water is warm, the sand is soft, and there are skilled surf instructors everywhere.

Waikiki Beach Boys is the most legendary surf operation in Waikiki — they've been teaching surfing and outrigger canoe surfing at the same beachfront location on Waikiki Beach since the mid-20th century. Group lessons run approximately $25–35 per person for 1–2 hours. Hans Hedemann Surf School at the Park Shore Waikiki is the other top-tier option — Hedemann is a former professional surfer and his school maintains strong standards. Group lessons from about $65 per person; private lessons available. Both schools guarantee that you'll stand up on a wave. For good reason: at Canoes on a calm day, nearly every beginner does.

Maui: Lahaina and Kihei

Maui has excellent beginner surf at several South Maui beaches. Cove Park in Kihei is the most popular beginner spot — a small, protected beach with consistent, small waves that are ideal for first-timers. Maui Surfer Girls (all genders welcome despite the name) is a highly regarded surf school operating out of Cove Park with a strong focus on instruction quality and a supportive atmosphere. Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy also runs lessons at Lahaina Harbor area for those staying on the West Maui coast.

Big Island: Kohala Coast

The Big Island is not known as a surf destination the way Oahu and Maui are, but the Kohala Coast on the west side of the island has several beginner-friendly beach breaks near the resort areas. Kohala Surf runs lessons at the calmer beach breaks near Hapuna Beach. For more advanced surfers visiting the Big Island, Honolii Beach Park near Hilo on the east side has a river-mouth wave that gets crowded with locals but is impressive.

Kauai: Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay on Kauai's north shore is one of the most beautiful surf spots in Hawaii — a wide, curved bay backed by mountains that receives consistent swells year-round, with a distinct character in summer (smaller, cleaner) versus winter (powerful, only for experienced surfers). Titus Kinimaka Hawaiian School of Surfing is the most respected lesson operator in Hanalei. Kinimaka is a legendary Hawaiian surfer who nearly died in a catastrophic Hanalei wipeout in 1989 and spent years recovering — his passion for sharing the sport with visitors is genuine and his instructors are among the best in the state.

What to Expect in a Lesson

Most beginner lessons run 90 minutes to 2 hours and cover: paddling technique, how to pop up to standing, wave selection basics, and water safety. The instructor will push your board into waves so you can focus on the pop-up without worrying about timing. By the end of a 2-hour lesson at a quality Waikiki school, most students have stood up successfully at least a few times. Boards are provided — soft-top beginner boards that minimize the chance of injury from the board itself. Swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen are all you need to bring.

Beyond Beginner

If you have some experience already and want to surf better spots, the North Shore of Oahu (summer, when it's manageable), Honolua Bay on Maui in winter, and Acid Drops and Infinities on the Big Island's Kohala Coast offer world-class waves for intermediate to advanced surfers. Surf camps at these locations run week-long intensive programs with in-water coaching — a genuinely effective way to level up quickly.
