Best Maui Luaus in 2026 — Locals' Honest Guide
Maui's Luau Scene Is Smaller but Stronger Than Oahu's
Maui has fewer luaus than Oahu but arguably better ones. The island's West Maui and South Maui resort corridors host several options, and the cultural quality — particularly at the Old Lahaina Luau — is the highest you'll find at a commercial luau anywhere in Hawaii. Here is an honest look at the main options.
Old Lahaina Luau — The Gold Standard
The Old Lahaina Luau has long been considered the most culturally authentic major luau in Hawaii. Before the 2023 Lahaina wildfires, it operated on the waterfront in historic Lahaina for decades. The company has continued operations at a new venue while working to rebuild, maintaining its commitment to the practices that made it special: on-site imu (underground oven) preparation of the kalua pig, hula performed in traditional rather than tourist-show style, and storytelling that traces genuine Hawaiian history and mythology rather than a sanitized version.
The difference is perceptible. The performers at Old Lahaina aren't doing choreography designed to impress a crowd — they're telling a story through an art form that's been passed down through generations. The food reflects this attention to authenticity as well: taro dishes, poi, lomi salmon, haupia, and the kalua pig itself are all prepared with care. Tickets run $150-200. For visitors who care about the substance of the experience, not just the entertainment value, this is the right Maui luau.
Feast at Lele — West Maui's Intimate Premium Option
Feast at Lele in Lahaina is the premium alternative for visitors who want small-table dining on the beach with a more intimate show. Rather than a buffet shared with 300 people, Feast at Lele seats guests at private tables directly on the sand and serves a multi-course meal paired with Polynesian cultural performances representing Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti in sequence.
It's significantly more expensive ($200-250 per person and higher for premium packages) but offers a fundamentally different experience — the scale feels like an excellent dinner show rather than a mass tourist event. If the Old Lahaina Luau is the right choice for cultural depth, Feast at Lele is the right choice for romance and elegance.
Wailea's Resort Luaus — South Maui Convenience
Several major South Maui resorts — including the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea — host periodic luau events for guests and outside visitors. These tend to be high-quality productions by virtue of the properties hosting them, with excellent food service and well-produced performances.
They're not running every night and require checking schedules well in advance, but for visitors staying in the Wailea resort corridor, a luau at your own or a neighboring resort eliminates the drive to West Maui entirely. The Four Seasons in particular runs events that are genuinely excellent.
Te Au Moana — Wailea's Regular Luau
Te Au Moana at the Marriott Wailea Beach is the most consistently available resort luau on the south side of Maui. Oceanfront setting, Polynesian revue, traditional imu ceremony, buffet dinner. Tickets around $150-175. It's a competent resort luau in a good setting — not the cultural depth of Old Lahaina, but a solid experience for South Maui visitors who don't want to drive across the island.
Choosing the Right Maui Luau
- Best authenticity and cultural content: Old Lahaina Luau — the benchmark, worth the trip to West Maui
- Best for couples or special occasions: Feast at Lele — private table, beachfront, multi-course dinner
- Best for South Maui resort guests: Te Au Moana at Marriott Wailea, or check your resort's schedule
What to Expect at Any Maui Luau
Arrive early — most luaus open the gates 30-45 minutes before the show begins for pre-show activities (lei making, coconut weaving, imu ceremony). These are often the most genuinely educational parts of the evening and easy to skip if you arrive just in time. Open bar is standard. Dress is resort casual — you don't need to dress up, but the atmosphere rewards it slightly. Book at least a week in advance; Old Lahaina in particular fills up during peak season well ahead of time.
Maui has the most concentrated luau scene in Hawaii — six big productions on a single island, three of them within 15 minutes of each other on the south shore. They're not the same.Looking for things to do in Maui? Browse upcoming Maui events →
